Footnotes

.In 1930, it was reported that this play was performed annually. It was learned from a man living at Stanton St. Bernard.
.Burkitt (1953) says 'our mummers were all natives of a tiny village in the Wiltshire Downs ... (at) ... the Rectory which was my home.' His father must therefore have been Rector of this village about 1880, i.e. 'more than 70 years ago'. Crockford's Clerical Directory for 1895, 27th issue, Horace Cox, London, 1895, gives William Esdaile Burkitt, Buttermere Rectory, Hungerford, rector of Buttermere, Diocese of Sarum, appointed 1869.
.Pt.3 addition
.Pt.2 changes: c.1872 and source Carpenter Coll. added
.Sharp (1880) refers to 'a dancing fight in two lines opposed to each other.' This is reminiscent of several chapbook versions.
