BLIDWORTH PLOUGH MONSAY PLAY

Noted from Mr.H.Nixon, Overlands, New Lane, Blidworth, by Peter T.
Millington, on the 28/5/71.

The first man entered whilst the others remained outside, saying:-

  In comes I, never been before,
  All my men stands at the€ door,
  Some can dance, s€ome can sing,
  Please will you let them all come in.

Then if the lady of the house said yes, then the second man came in (?)
followed by the third who said: -

  In comeS I Betsy BellzeBub,
  On my head I carry a tub,
  Im my hand a frying pan,
  Trying to catch all the money I can.
  There's bread and cheese in my bag,
  Pudding in my lantern,
  If you'd abeen where l'd abeen,
  You wouldn't abeen awanting.

The fourth man then entere bragging, and then the fifth man, who kills
the fourth man. The doctor then enters and cures the dead man, whereon the
last man enters singing this song:-

  Good master aad good mistress
  As you sit round the fire,
  Remember we the ploughboys
  Thet plough the mud and mire,
  The mud and mire it is so deep
  And the water runs so clear.
  Put what you want into our box,
  And a jug of your best beer,
  And a jug of your best beer,
  A jug of your best beer,
  Put what you want into our box,
  And a jug of your best beer.

After that the€y were given money, and maybe some food and drink

NOTES:- Mr. Nixon said that the play was performed on Plough Boys Night.
and the actors were called Plough Bullocks, and composed a gang of
eight or ten.
