Newark Advertiser,
22nd Jan.1890, Vol.38, No.1807, p.5f
"The ancient custom in connection with this day was observed
as usual in this village on Monday week. The plough-lads in
their fantastic costumes, started out at nine o'clock in the
morning for the surrounding villages and farm houses and did
not finish their round until late at night. During their absence,
numbers of little lads, adorned with ribbons, were to be seen
running from house to house with their plea for 'coppers'"
