Footnotes

1.We do not understand these locations given by Williams Coll. [Aston, Bampton and Chimney]. They occur at the head of a MS which contains a play text, but whether they should be taken to imply that each location used the same text, or that one gang visited each village is not clear. They are included here for completeness.

18.Each reference has a different text, which suggests that more than one version was current here. The Oxford Times (1898) text may not come from Oxford.
19.Lee wrote down this play in 1853, but first saw it in 1839. The man from whom it was noted had performed at Brill, Bucks, (q.v.), in 1807, and his father at Thame Park in the previous century. The text is written in rhyming couplets, and begins with King Alfred and his Bride entering. Other characters, King Cole, King William, the Dragon, etc., follow: 'Morres-men come forward and dance to a tune from fife and drum' in the middle of the action, and there is a general mêlée in which all characters fall down. The Doctor gives pills all round, which cures them all save the Dragon, who dies in convulsions. We have listed it as 'Hero-Combat', though admit that the version is not typical of the classification.
