Footnotes | |
1. | Pt.3 addition |
2. | The source for these plays is letters from R. W. Shipley to D. N. Kennedy, February 15th and 23rd, 1933. Mr Shipley was the secretary of the local branch of the E.F.D.S.S., and knew what constituted a Folk Play, and said that he 'had heard of plays' at these places. Against some of the villages he gave the local name for the ceremonial - e.g. 'Riddings (Molly Dancers), Tibshelf (Guisers)', etc. Shipley also collected the Brimington and Chesterfield plays about this time, and was careful to distinguish between plays and Old Tup ceremonies (see p.14). We think that his evidence is reliable, though it is shown as 'Doubtful' for want of exact details. Pt.1 change: It appears to me that all the places marked 'Doubtful Hero-Combat', citing Shipley MS in Vaughan Williams Memorial Library Coll., could reasonably be classified as 'Hero-Combat'. |
3. | Pt.2 change: 1952 and Christmas added |
4. | Pt.2 changes: Extant year and source Vaughan Williams Memorial Library Coll. added |
5. | Pt.1 change: Delete entirely. Another copy of the same MS in the Barley Collection, although it is headed 'Ironville', has a MS note by Barley that it was really from Underwood, Notts. |
6. | This text was collected in 1921 'in the colliery district'. Three boys from different localities collected the greater part of it, and their renderings were almost identical. Two other boys supplied the single incident of the fight, death and resurrection. |
