The performers were a loosely-organised group that was 'formalised' in 1986, when Ripon celebrated 1,100 years of its Royal Charter as a City and so a specially-written play was performed during St Wilfrid's Week (1st week of August) on the market square, chronicling the granting of Ripon's Charter. This play has been performed in that week ever since.
