This map is an improved version of one that appeared in my PhD thesis (Millington, 2002, p.234, Maps 3 & 4), and in my paper on textual analysis (Millington, 2003, p.103-104, Map 4). In this version, generated from the Historical Database of Folk Play Scripts, the markers are coloured, whereas the original map was in monochrome. The scripts database has also grown slightly since 2002 (Millington, 1994-2006).
The breakdown of script types was prepared with the aid of computerised tools that group together texts containing similar collections of lines. The following hierarchy of the classes has been copied from the scripts database, and the class titles are linked to the relevant descriptions in the database's Definitions.
This map only shows plays under the main heading of "Quack Doctor Plays". It also excludes the few "Compiled Hybrid" and "Composed" plays because they are known not to have arisen through traditional transmission processes.
