Brief note as follows:-

"Recorded on the 4th March 1971 at the 'Crown' Mansfield, from an unnamed member of the Mansfield Young Teacher Group from Kirkby-in-Ashfield.

Up till about 1964, three of four men or boys in at least one street would go from house to house on New Years Morn after Midnight. They had blackened faces, and they recited a rhyme (no acting) for which they were rewarded with a florin each or some other silver coin."

"Recorded in 1971 from an unnamed informant in Mansfield, Notts.

The informant, who at the time was a student teacher on teaching practice in Mansfield, made a casual visit to the 'Cart and Horses' at Kirkby, on or about the 4th November (1968), where she witnessed the performance of a play by children."
