"PLOUGH BULLOCKING"
Nottingham Guardian, 12th Jan.1926, No.21776, p.10 d-e

Photo with the caption; "'Plough Bullocking.' - An old custom which was observed on Burgage Hill, Southwell, this week. The lanterns used are over a hundred years old." The Photo shows four men. All are wearing hats, and appear to have beards, but these could be blackening. One is carrying a four-tined pitchfork, and two others are carrying two-tined pitchforks with spheroidal objects stuck on one tine. These objects are the size of grapefruit, but are more likely to be swedes or similar, especially as they are not fixed very far onto the tines. Two are carrying the old lanterns. One is wearing a smock, another a white coat, a third an ordinary jacket, and the fourth appears to just have vest and trousers.
