Mr. E. Condon (Inf.)
[Plough Monday custom from Caythorpe, Notts.]
P.T.Millington Collection, Col. Jan.1983

Mr. Condon responded to the appeal for information in P.T.Millington (1983).

A stud farmer from the Notts./Leics. border specially decorated his Shire stallions on Plough Monday and paraded them through the villages, including Caythorpe, Notts. He visited the farms, where the farmers viewed the stallions as potential sires for their mares. The farmer also came at other times of the year but the horses were not decorated then. Mr. Condon (born 1920) remembered this from about 1942 and 1943, and was informed by other Caythorpe residents that the practice had been terminated due to an epidemic of foot and mouth disease.
