G.Markham (1653)

Source:

Gervase Markham (Auth.)
Markham's Farewell to husbandry
London: E.Brewster & George Sawbridge, 1653

The 1653 edition is cited by P.Herring (1926), probably indirectly via R.Chambers (1869) 'Book of Days'.

Markham sets his enumeration of the duties of the plough-man "...after Christmas, and about plow-day (which is the first setting out of the plow)...". There is no calendar definition of the day nor any mention of customs.

The book was first published in 1625. Gervase Markham (1568? - 1637) was brought up at Cotham, Notts.
