LOCAL NOTES AND QUERIES : FACTS, CUSTOMS, AND LEGENDS OF OLD-TIME CHRISTMASES IN NOTTS. PART III
*Nottinghamshire Weekly Express, 21st Dec.1906

Further continuation of Nottinghamshire Weekly Express (1906a) and (1906b) describing various Christmas customs. The article quotes from Mr. W.H.Stevenson's paper on 'Churchwarden's Accounts of Holme Pierrepont' contributed to Series 2 of 'Old Nottinghamshire' which it states 'draws attention to certain payments for Christmas sports' as follows:

"'The assessment agreed to be paid by the parishioners points', says he, 'to the discontinuance of some medieval ceremony - probably as a consequence of the Statute of Superstitious Uses.) The gatherings with hobby-horse ('the parishioners were content to paye yerelye, towardes meynetenaunce of the Church stocke, 1552, because other getheringes with hobby-horse and lightes were layed downe') appear to have been something similar to a custom described by Dr. Plot in his 'History of Staffordshire'".
