Footnotes

1.Pt.2 New substitute entry
2.This is a wholly atypical text, one of the dancers being killed in the manner of an 'Hero-Combat' play, and the Bessy being 'hung' in the 'Sword Dance + execution' form. The dance continued after this date without any trace of a play.
Pt.2 change: delete entire entry and substitute [two new entries].
3.See p.19.
Pt.2 change: Source Perry (1946) added
4.Alexander and the King of Egypt (1788) is the earliest reported copy of a chapbook, and was printed in Newcastle upon Tyne. This is the only evidence for the inclusion of this location.
5.Bosanquet (1929) gives 'Woodburn'. There are two of these, near Otterburn, East and West. The latter is on the main road and better known.
